Oil tycoon from Richford,ohn D. Rockefeller was born today in 1928. Rockefeller was born in the small town of Richford, N.Y. His family moved a lot and eventually settled in suburb of Cleveland where Rockefeller would make his fortunes.
Rockefeller dabbled in different business. Then during the Civil War he built his first oil refinery in Cleveland. Oil at the time was just begging. By the end of the war he bought his partners and began to expand his business eventually creating the Standard Oil Company.
Standard Oil rode the wave of a oil driven economy and became a large monopoly controlling or owning many other companies. The U.S. Supreme court eventually broke up the company into separate smaller companies. Two of the more famous companies were Exxon and Mobil.
Through Standard Oil, Rockefeller became a multi-millionaire. He, however, didn’t keep all the money to himself and became a great philanthropist. Many universities and schools benefited from his generosity.
